You can submit questions using Facebook and Twitter once the meeting has started.

I submitted the following question and urge you all to do the same. Below is an article from LA Times discussing a recent proposal in California to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Furthermore this proposal was approved by a key committee of the assembly.

Give the article below a read and enjoy, finally a major step towards reform.

Out

Taken from this is not my piece.

Marijuana legalization bill approved by key Assembly committee
The measure, which would tax and regulate pot for users 21 and older, is unlikely to get additional consideration until next year.

By Patrick McGreevy

January 12, 2010 | 10:06 p.m.

Reporting from Sacramento - A proposal to legalize and tax marijuana in California was approved by a key committee of the Assembly on Tuesday, but it is not expected to get further consideration by the Legislature until next year.

Despite a procedural glitch, backers hailed the committee's action as historic because it represented the first legislative approval of the proposal.

"This vote marks the formal beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition in the United States," predicted Stephen Gutwillig, California state director of the Drug Policy Alliance, a pot legalization group.

The legislation would allow those who are at least 21 years old to possess up to an ounce of marijuana for recreational use. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), author of the measure, said it would provide needed revenue for the state as well as regulation of the drug.

Existing law "is harming our youth," Ammiano said. "Drug dealers do not ask for ID."

It is estimated that the proposed $50 tax on each ounce of marijuana sold, along with license fees charged to cultivators, would generate $1.3 billion a year to be used to pay for drug education and treatment.

Ammiano said his bill is not expected to get a required hearing by a second committee in time to meet a Friday deadline. He said he plans to reintroduce the legislation if a similar initiative proposed for the November ballot is not approved by voters.

The anticipated revenue would not be worth the grief the bill would cause, said Assemblyman Danny Gilmore (R-Hanford), a former assistant chief with the California Highway Patrol.

"We're going to legalize marijuana, we're going to tax it and then we're going to educate our kids about the harm of drugs. You've got to be kidding me," Gilmore said. "What's next? Are we going to legalize methamphetamines, cocaine?"

The Assembly Public Safety Committee approved Ammiano's bill, AB 390, on a 4-3 vote.

patrick.mcgreevy

@latimes.com

(hastily created this blog on 01-14-2010 around 10am, am now late for appointment!)

Tell us what you think

At the right of the screen is a poll. This is LAW ENFORCEMENT making the claim of legalization!

Enjoy Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://legalizeforlife.blogspot.com/2009/12/blog-post.html' title='Law Enforcement Big Wigs say Legalize! This is a call to (metaphorical) arms. It is time we make great strides in the war against the war on drugs. For too long over-controlling politicians have set forth ridiculous speculation about the "evils" of marijuana.

Marijuana use is -believe it or not- actually safer than alcohol and tobacco. this is proven. The actual effects are less detrimental to ones health; both short term and long term.

I prepose a test model. Submitted for your approval. Many folks have submitted similar ideas, however i feel an end all, cure all answer will help.

case and point, my plan for marijuana reform is as follows.

1) Legalize Recreational use of Marijuana.
This is the best idea ever. Doing this would fix many issues. First off, the government should be involved in the regulation of marijuana. Marijuana should be sold at gas stations, super markets, etc etc. It should be sold in a box, with approximately 10-20 rolled joints. This may sound familiar; ever heard of cigarettes?

Legalizing Marijuana would also help with financial issues. People, we waste BILLIONS of dollars every YEAR keeping non-violent criminals in the prison systems. BILLIONS.... that's unfathomable. In today's age, the big thing to do is save money any way possible, yet we are continuing to waste BILLIONS of DOLLARS every YEAR on johnny pot-head who got popped at his house burning down a spliff. Because that makes sense.

If we, instead, were to LEGALIZE Marijuana, we would spend ZERO ($0.00) dollars a year enforcing, processing, trying, housing and incarcerating harmless pot smokers. It seems to me our funds are being misguided. LETS FIX THIS GROSS WASTE OF MONEY. THE DOLLAR IS WEAK AND WE NEED EVERY DOLLAR WE CAN. LET'S START PAYING OFF THE BAILOUT MONEY!

2) Cut the BULLSHIT about how bad Marijuana is.
Look, back in the 1920's, people may have believed that marijuana is a gateway drug, and will drive you mad and make you kill babies and blah blah blah whatever. Cut the shit, when our OWN PRESIDENT is openly claiming to have used marijuana at some point in time, this is a clear sign that weed wont ruin your life. wait, what was that? WEED WON"T RUN YOUR LIFE. IF YOU SMOKE WEED YOU COULD STILL BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IF YOU WANT. Stop lying to the public about weed. This is ESPECIALLY directed to the stiffs who make marijuana law and have NEVER USED it. Who are YOU to pass judgment on what is right and wrong when you don't even KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE?!

3) certain things stay illegal.
Now, don't take what i am saying out of context. I DO believe marijuana needs to be regulated. I DO believe the government should be involved with the production and sale of marijuana as they are with tobacco and alcohol.
I DO FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE IMPAIRED SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED. THIS IS NOT THE WILD WEST, MARIJUANA SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO THE SAME RULES AND REGULATIONS AS ALCOHOL.

I believe a compromise not only can, but should be reached. I believe if everyone takes a moment to look at the grand scheme of things, we will all realize that the tight regulation of such a "dangerous drug" is utter bull shit and introducing marijuana as a "controlled recreational drug" if you wish is not only progress, but it is evolution.

I challenge anyone to argue this fact. if you come to me saying that weed killed your mom, I will call you a liar to your face. It is time for the bullshit and the lies to stop. it is time for people to stand up for what is right and true. We need to take control of this situation and take the lawmaking away from politicians and put it back in the hands of the American people. If this is a true democracy than we have the ability and THE RIGHT to CHANGE THE LAW. Let us start exercising that right...

out.
